The Nidderdale Cricket League

It will be a source of great satisfaction to the cricket clubs and their supporters that the Nidderdale Cricket League has been brought to a workable basis and is likely to form an important feature and give peculiar emphasis to cricket in the dale. It goes without saying that the formation of the league will increase the enthusiasm and we trust good natured rivalry which has hitherto existed in but a more or less disinterested form between the clubs which at present constitute the league. It would be untrue to deny that several questions of a knotty and delicate character have not had to be discussed and solved by the committee constituted by the representatives of the several clubs. But whatever influence the more difficult questions may have had on the league, they have we believe been amicably disposed of, even the once vexed question of what constituted a bonafide playing member of a club engaged in league fixtures. The arrangement of the fixtures has been completed and the struggle for the trophy will commence on May 5th, upon which date two matches will take place: Birstwith v Hampsthwaite, and, Ripley v Dacre Banks

The initial games will no doubt be watched with interest and as the season progresses it is to be hoped that the success of the league wil be assured and the efforts of the promoters thereby rewarded.

Hampsthwaite CC

One of the good effects of the league is that it will ensure a good list of fixtures for the clubs engaged. The fixtures for Hampsthwaite CC may be taken as evidence of this for it is not of late years that this club has presented such a full and gratifying list which tend not only to improve the status of the game but revive the interest i the affairs of the club.

Alexandra Park CC must be particularly strong in bowling if their match with Hampsthwaite is an indication of their true strength. The Hampsthwaite batsmen collectively reached 9 runs, the bowling of V T & G F Atkinson doing great honour.

Vincent Atkinson had 5 for 8 and performed the hat-trick, whilst his brother took 5 wickets for 1 run and headed the score with 19 runs.

24 August

Considerable excitement prevailed when the league fixture Beckwithshaw v Hampsthwaite, ordered by the Council of the Lower Nidderdale Cricket to be replayed, came off on the Beckwithshaw ground on Wednesday. Hampsthwaite won the toss and elected to bat first. an excellent first wicket stand was made by T Moore (29) and F Appleby (25). Over 50 runs being on the board before  a wicket fell. E Stott 6 -20 & R A Beer 4 -15 however put a different complexion on the game, the Hampsthwaite side being all out for 76.

Early on in the match, in fact before play had been proceeding many minutes, a steady downpour of rain came and continued to the end.

Beckwithshaw started satisfactorily with W Crossland playing a steady game for 19 before he was bowled by a excellent ball from F Carr. Wickets then fell pretty regularly to J K  & F Carr. E Stott (9) & J Slinger (9) helped things forward and R A Breare (27*) & H Chaplin (2*)  finally carried the total to 77 - 7 thus winning a notable game by 3 wickets. Messrs H J T Bale & J Redfearn acting as umpires.

Nidderdale League June 5th 1920

Hampsthwaite and Killinghall tried to decide their abandoned Nidderdale League match on Saturday. Very keen rivalry was shown on both sides being neighbouring villages and it was rather s coincidence that both teams on the previous Saturday score the same number of runs against Bilton and Glasshouses, viz 18 each.

Hampsthwaite won the toss and decided to bat. Runs came steadily until C Barker, cutting, was beautiful to watch, quickly put on 34. With the total at 72 - 5 the brothers Ashby became associated and although Killinghall tried 7 bowlers everything seemed alike to them and by good sound cricket they carried the Hampsthwaite score to 194, the partnership putting on 122. The innings was declared closed at this point. This left Killinghall 2 hours to bat.

The Killinghall veteren G Wright was the first to face the Hampsthwaite bowling but lost his wicket second ball; a clever catch at point dismissed Dawson. They struggled hard with A Brown smothering some good balls from Appleby but unfortunately with the total at 41 - 3 rain stopped and the match was abandoned.

The Beckwithshaw Cricket team arrived on the Hampsthwaite ground whilst this game was in progress having been disappointed with their game at Birstwith and they seemed to be very outspoken, one to another, with regard to the Hampsthwaite bowler's and fielders, preparing no doubt for their visit to Hampsthwaite on June 12th, when they expect to get some points.

Dacre Banks v Hampsthwaite

Hampsthwaite visited Dacre Banks; Dacre Banks won the toss and put the visitors in to bat on what appeared to be an easy run-getting wicket.  50 runs were produced for 5 wickets when J W West was put on to bowl and he quickly brought the innings to a close for a total of 62, taking 5 wickets for 6 runs. Dacre had 5 wickets down for 18 runs but D Cassells who scored 25 altered the appearance of the game. The fielding of Hampsthwaite was not up to their usual standard, 3 catches being missed. When the last man went in Dacre Banks required 5 runs to win but after scoring 4 H Brookes jumped in front of his wickets to a ball from C Barker which pitched almost on his toes and was given out LBW.  Dacre was very disappointed in not making a win of this match but H Brookes was missed from the first ball he received and afterwards scored 13, so a division of the points fairly represented the scores. Tie 62 each.

1925

Hampsthwaite won the league in their first season on their new ground which had been opened by the Yorkshire Captain in April.

1927

In 1927 a rare feat was accomplished in the 2nd Division match between Beckwithshaw IInds  and Hampsthwaite IInds when Dearlove Addyman of Hampsthwaite took all ten wickets for the Hampsthwaite side. Mr Addyman was a local butcher, 49 years old and described in the press as "still very alert and an example to men many years his junior !." In 1931 he became Chairman of the League, a position he held for a number of years.

1929

Towards the end of the year plans were put in hand to extend the playing area at Hampsthwaite The 1929 season also saw the establishment of a Nidderdale Evening League in which teams from Burnt Yates, Darley, Hampsthwaite Birstwith and Killinghall took part.

1930

The 1930 season saw William (Billy) Bowers of Hampsthwaite being invited to attend  the County Ground  for trials. Billy was undoubtedly one of the best players to emerge in the league and played a number games for Yorkshire IInd XI.

The Nidderdale Evening League continued that season and was strengthened by the addition of  Lofthouse, Fellbeck, Glasshouses, Pateley Bridge and Dacre Banks. There also appears to have been an Evening Knock-Out Cup competition. Matches were played on neutral grounds with the final being at Dacre Banks on Wednesday 30th July between Pateley Bridge and Hampsthwaite. Hampsthwaite were the victors by 35 runs and were presented with the Trophy by Willie Ellis of the host club who were  congratulated as being the first winners of the Cup.

It was a good season for Hampsthwaite for not only did they win the Cup they were also involved in a close race for the league with Bilton. Indeed they  finished level on points necessitating a play off for the Division 1 title. The match was played at Dacre Banks on October 4th "irrespective of the weather".  Hampsthwaite batting first were dismissed for 38 and Bilton won by 8 wickets. A consolation for the losers was that they were presented with the Nidderdale League Trophy after the play-off match thus achieving an "evening" double for the season.

Many Thanks to Barry Gill who provided most of the information on the Club's history.
